English Language Development Program
English Language Development (ELD) Program
Our Mission
Anchor Bay School District is committed to supporting English learners in developing English language proficiency while accessing grade-level academic content and actively engaging in the school community. We value students’ diverse backgrounds, home languages, and cultures, all of which contribute to the richness of our schools.
Who are English learners?
English learners (ELs) are students whose home language indicates that they might benefit from additional support in developing English language proficiency. Students are identified through a home language survey and screening process. Students are placed in age-appropriate grade-level classes and receive English language development services and supports tailored to their individual language proficiency levels and academic needs.
Each spring, all ELs participate in the WIDA ACCESS or Alternate ACCESS assessment, a state-mandated measure of English language proficiency. Students who score 4.8 or higher (out of 6.0) on this assessment are reclassified as Former English Learners (FELs) and exit the EL program.
