School Psychologists are professionals who are trained to address the mental health and educational needs of students. The goal in working with students, parents and all school personnel is to help make education a successful and positive experience.

All School Psychologists in Michigan must be certified by the Michigan Department of Education. Current training in school psychology requires a minimum of a Specialist degree from an accredited school psychology graduate program. Professional preparation includes education in mental health, child development, research-based learning theory, assessment and instructional practices. An extensive internship in an educational setting is also required in school psychology training. Once certified, School Psychologists are required to engage in continuing education in order to maintain their certification.

School Psychologists provide many services to parents, children and school personnel including: consultation, evaluation, intervention and education. School Psychologists collaborate with others involved with the welfare of students to develop and apply solutions for learning, social and behavioral problems. They interview and assess students, work with students, families and teachers to implement strategies and provide information and education to help all that work with children.
